My Calculated Ecological Footprint

So I took the online quiz at www.footprintnetwork.org/calculator and I was not really shocked at the results because I already had a feeling I was not being very eco-friendly. (I plan on changing though! Promise!) Here are my results:(click the image to see it bigger!)
I explored scenarios and checked the ones I REALLY thought I could do:
after making the changes I was shown :
Overall I thought the quiz was very interesting and helpful! I live with my parents so I pretty much have to convince them to buy energy efficient appliances if they buy them (which is RARE). The second change is a bit harder. The "purchasing products that use less packaging" bit is hard because sometimes you NEED a certain product and you don't want to switch to something different. I usually like trying new products so I could work on that. The first change is EASY PEASY because I RARELY eat meat. I considered going vegetarian at the start of the year but it's tough! If given the choice I would definetly choose a vegetarian or vegan meal.

spread the science!

AS I learn about more websites and blogs related to Environmental Science I will add them to this post and update it!
  • I don't know about you but I didn't really know what CAN and CAN NOT go into the blue recycle bin that goes in my front yard every Thursday until recently. This website is for Riverside residents only and lists what you can recycle: http://www.riversideca.gov/publicworks/trash/recycling-what.asp

  • This website was provided by my professor. The Footprint Calculator will let you know "How much land area does it take to support your lifestyle?" You take an online quiz "to find out your Ecological Footprint, discover your biggest areas of resource consumption, and learn what you can do to tread more lightly on the earth."

Me. Myself, and I

Art by Banksy. Banksy is the pseudonym of an English graffiti artist, political and environmental activist, film director, and painter. His true identity is unknown.

Be you a fellow reader, a classmate, professor, or person who ended up on this site by accident, rest assured I will do my very best to entertain  and enlighten you with my first ever blog post for my Environmental Science class at Riverside Community College. I've always been into conservation and recycling and how people contribute to or exacerbate the problems of pollution and mass waste. I've never really been active about my interest in environmental science but the idea of how much waste I produce ALONE has been heavy on my mind, and it only made me think how much my family produces, and then my neighborhood and the list goes on! So I am taking the class to educate myself on Environmental Science co I can become a better inhabitant of our wonderful planet Earth. A topic I really want to learn about is about Waste, or more specifically landfills and the trash we produce and what happens to it. In my mind I imagine a wide spread of land filled with mountains of discarded trash and the way I see it, we cant keep creating landfills for our waste! There has got to be something else that can be done with our trash! Coincidentally, my class will be visiting a landfill for a fieldtrip and if I can I will take photos and report the experience on here.

Now about me. I LOVE writing about myself. I don't know why. I love to write about my interests as much as a young adult tech savvy person likes to take "selfies". So I will probably divulge to much information here, and hopefully you find it to your amusement.
I was born in Santa Ana California. All my good friends lived a few houses away and all my family lived so close to each other. It was not all butterflies and rainbows though. I saw some things that could not be unseen! Such as a cross-dresser hooker I saw once when I was walking home with my family. I also witnessed two gang fights to close for comfort in the same night, once again walking home with my family. One of the fights was 5 feet away from us and a poor girl was being assaulted by what I believe was a gang of "cholas". Once their was a passed out drunk right by our front yard. All us kids were daring each other to poke him with a stick! I can't complain though, it made me more aware of the world and it's problems but also made me appreciate where I live now. Now I live here in Riverside. I've lived here since the eighth grade which was more or less eight years ago, and let me tell you, things are a lot more vanilla and boring around here, or at least most areas here are. Evert since I can remember, I've always had a passion for art and all it's different areas such as photography, illustration, graphic design etc. My favorite photographers include Ansel Adams, and Carl Christensen. My favorite street artists are Banksy who I mentioned earlier and Keith Haring. I love illustrations by Shel Silverstein and Quentin Blake who illustrates for Roald Dahl novels.
